Sp__ER_Pet_Hosp_Stacked_2016_05_23.jpgYou could say it’s a good time to become a Veterinary Technician. Boasting over 95,000 workers in the United States, the occupational outlook is only positive; between 2014 and 2024, the veterinary technician profession is expected to increase by 19 percent – much faster than the average growth rate of 7% for all occupations.1 This industry growth and demand for technicians was one of many factors behind BluePearl Veterinary Partners’ recent partnership with Penn Foster to offer a Veterinary Technician Associate Degree program. Announced today, the program is available to eligible BluePearl associates at their 50+ hospitals across the nation.2

Playing an essential role in animal care, veterinary technicians are in particularly high demand in veterinary hospitals, where they can assist with surgery and other medical procedures, administer medications, and help pet owners understand the doctor’s recommendations. In a statement today, Jennifer Welser, BluePearl’s Chief Medical Officer, refers to veterinary technicians as “the backbone of our practices” and notes that the industry could not exist without them. The partnership will ultimately open doors for associates and give them a pathway to reach their career goal of becoming a credentialed veterinary technician (CVT).

Once enrolled, BluePearl employees will work toward their degree in Penn Foster’s four-semester, online program, which also includes two hands-on externships for students to enhance the skills learned in their academic classes. The program is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and graduates from the program are eligible to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE).

To demonstrate their commitment to providing career advancement opportunities for associates, BluePearl is offering employees up to 90 percent tuition assistance. The combined flexibility of online learning and removal of the majority of the financial barrier provides employees with a feasible way of advancing their education and gaining relevant skills, all while still being able to continue working full time in their chosen field.

We’re looking forward to seeing the first cohort of students join the Penn Foster Veterinary Academy and watch them develop as they progress in the program! As we noted above, the demand for veterinary technicians is not slowing down and the students will be that much more prepared to pursue their career goals upon graduation.
