Arne Duncan Chicago CREDOn April 6th, friends and families gathered to watch their loved ones reach a significant milestone in their lives, as Chicago CRED welcomed its newest group of 27 high school graduates. Twenty-six men and the program’s first female graduate walked across the stage to receive their high school diplomas, taking an important step in their journey to make a difference in their communities and create better lives for themselves and for their families.

Former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who is a managing partner at Emerson Collective and a leading force behind the success of the CRED program, was one of the featured speakers at the ceremony, along with Deloitte Chicago Managing Partner Carl Allegretti.

In an interview with Fox 32 Chicago, Duncan spoke to the program’s value in the community, and praised graduates like Latrail Baker, who sat beside him, for all of the hard work they’re doing to positively impact their communities and city.

The event even drew some familiar celebrity faces, as Chicago-based rapper Common made an appearance!

Launched by Emerson Collective in 2016, Chicago CRED seeks to reduce gun violence in Chicago by providing education, career training, and support services to at-risk men. A partner to CRED since 2017, Penn Foster delivers its online high school diploma program to CRED participants without their diploma or equivalent.

With Penn Foster’s online curriculum, students in the CRED program are able to work at a pace that’s comfortable for them and flexible to their schedule, while receiving continuous support from their CRED coaches and instructors along the way. To date, 39 participants have graduated from Penn Foster High School.
